Our Punishment
We had been so close to reaching our paradise... perhaps too close. Perhaps we had gotten so close to the light that we had burned ourselves. It used to be just us...all in a small clan ruled by one Alpha and Beta. We were a family that shared our beds and food among each other. We accepted newcomers with open arms, no questions, we all had pasts we wanted to forget.
As a clan we ruled the small, unopened valley trapped in a timeless void that we dreamed would stay that way...but dreams...they never become reality. We should have known that.
The Nightriders. They were the clan of darkness, evil darkness. They came and set the lands ablaze. Into chaos and mourning as the crimson terror scattered and destroyed. The valley's timeless seal was broken.
It was all over. Somewhere deep in the bowels of our very being; in the marrow of our bones we knew this. We knew that we had been exposed, so why did we keep fighting? Why were we so determined to keep sunshine and water on an already dead rose? Nevertheless we continued our war, shedding countless gallions of blood, making the land scream. Finally the last of us were left as the final leaf crumbled in defeat upon the ground. Everything was lost.
We had always been told that calling to the elements was dangerous. Groveling to the gods was a forbidden taboo never to be even thought of, but raising our broken hearts and battered tiaras we sung to the moon for relief...we cried until our parched throats stood ripping with the strain, and even then we perserverd until the elements came upon us as a response to our howls.
We open our orbs now to our lands now restored. We see the peace and the joy that once reigned like an eagle who controls the skies. However, with every wish there is a price to pay, and we paid the ultimate. Our lands are not in union, but in provinces separated forever. And us...we suffer the fate to rule these lands as long as we may live.
Immortality isn't given as a reward, but as a Punishment.
